Here are some commonly asked questions regarding accessing ILRT servers using SSH.

Q: Will I be able to use inbound SSH connections to ILRT servers from outside the University network?

A: There are 2 bastion hosts that allow inbound SSH connections; shell.ilrt.bris.ac.uk and mail.ilrt.bris.ac.uk.

Q: What do I do if I want to access an SSH server from outside of the university network which blocked?

A: There are a number of options:

1. First of all SSH to one of the bastion hosts listed above and then SSH to the internal host.

2. Use a SOCKS/Proxy or configure SSH to connect via a SOCKS/Proxy on the bastion host.

3. Use the University VPN.

Q. Can I use the UoB VPN instead of a bastion host to connect to firewalled SSH servers?

A. Yes see http://www.bristol.ac.uk/is/computing/advice/homeusers/uobvpn/howto/

Q. My username and password is not accepted by one or either of the bastion hosts.

A. Please make sure you are using your UoB username and password.

Q. I still cannot connect.

A. Please, submit a new ticket request to ilrt-helpdesk@bris.ac.uk and we will attempt to rectify the problem.

Q. I assume that this is different to the VPN?

A. Yes. The VPN service is a separate method of access.
